Answers to those burning questions

…and a few other things that might be handy to know

I work across both in an integrated way, moving fluidly between them depending on what’s needed at the time.  Coaching tends to be more forward-focused and action-oriented; psychotherapy tends to be slower and more exploratory, looking at patterns and experiences that might be getting in the way.  A way to look at it is like a house – therapy is about the foundations and existing structures, built with the best of intentions with what was available at the time, but not necessarily suitable to what is needed today .  Coaching is the reno! As beautiful as a makeover can be, it won’t make a great house unless we address those underlying issues (fix the plumbing, block up the holes mice come in!)

Firstly, no, it’s really different in the way it works to sports coaching and is advice free.  It is a facilitative approach to enable people to find their own solutions through investigation and dialogue. It is action and future oriented though, so much more about defining a goal and creating strategies and actions to meet it.  I use some NLP techniques in here to get beyond conscious thought and leverage client’s inner resourcefulness and creativity.

Gestalt is a humanistic therapy that pays attention to present-moment experience — what you’re thinking, feeling and sensing right now, and what that reveals about how you engage with the world. It’s relational, creative and deeply respectful of the whole person. It’s central to how I work in both coaching and psychotherapy because it creates the conditions for real insight, not just intellectual understanding. Things shift when we experience them, not just talk about them.

Across coaching and therapy, people typically come with things like: feeling stuck or lost, anxiety, low self-worth, relationship patterns, life or career transitions, wanting more meaning or direction, leadership challenges, recovering from burnout, navigating major change, or just a persistent sense that life could be more than this. If you’re not sure whether what you’re dealing with is enough to warrant support — it is. People don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from this work.

Absolutely, though it depends on the condition and what kind of support is needed. For more severe presentations, I may not be the most appropriate primary support. It’s important to note that I am also not able to prescribe medication. What I can say is that I have a broad scope of practice across both coaching and psychotherapy, and an extensive network of skilled professionals I can refer to when needed. The best thing to do is reach out and have a conversation.

It really depends on what you’re coming for.  Six sessions is a meaningful minimum where you can see things start to shift. For some people, this is enough momentum to get them heading in the right direction.  For many others, weekly or fortnightly sessions over a longer period of time allow us to really dig into core patterns and it is from this that lasting, meaningful change happens. I can give you a better idea after our initial free conversation.

The free discovery session is a genuine conversation — no pitch, no script. We’ll talk about what’s brought you here, what you’re hoping for, and whether working together feels like the right fit. You’re welcome to ask me anything. From there, if we decide to proceed, the first proper session is about laying the groundwork: understanding your situation more fully, what you’ve already tried, and beginning to shape what we’re working toward.

24 hours notice is required for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will be charged in full. I know life happens — if something genuinely urgent comes up, please reach out as soon as possible and I’ll do my best to find a solution.

Medicare does not currently provide rebates for psychotherapy in Australia, and most private health funds don’t either. However, the out-of-pocket cost from a psychologist or psychiatrist is often similar to my total fee — and coaches typically charge $250+ per session with no rebate available. You may find working with me is better value than you’d expect. See the Getting Started page for full fee information.

Yes — I work with clients both in person in  East Melbourne and online. My preference is to meet face to face for a variety of reasons, however online can still be very effective and I appreciate that it’s a lot more convenient. Put it this way – I’d rather see you than not, however you might find that in-person offers a richness of experience that is highly valuable.

I’m situated at 12 Wellington Pde, East Melbourne. There are a variety of 1 and 2P spots within walking distance. Jolimont Station is a 5 minute walk. the number 48 & 75 tram also stop outside, plus buses 246, 905 & 907 all stop on Hoddle St, almost outside.  It’s also not a bad walk or ride and there are several very decent cafes and restaurants nearby, as well as the parklands around the MCG
